Intel’s 8th Gen “Coffee Lake” desktop processors could launch on October 5

Last month, Intel introduced the first 8th Generation U-series Core processors aimed at thin and light notebooks. Most folks, however, have been waiting for Intel to unveil the first desktop processors based on the 8th Generation Intel Core processor family. According to a new report, Intel is likely to launch the first desktop “Coffee Lake” processors on the 5th of October. Since the new processor family comes with an increased core count compared to the previous generation, Intel is expected to price the new processors at a premium.

As always, the initial lineup is expected to be very limited, although we are expecting to see at least four new processors with six cores and a few quad-core SKUs as well. In Europe, the entry-level Core i3-8350K will apparently be priced at 199 EUR (Rs.15,300 approx.). The more powerful Core i5-8600K is expected to be priced at 299 EUR (Rs.23,000 approx.), while the mighty Core i7-8700K will be priced at 419 EUR (Rs.32,200 approx.).

Initially, consumers will be limited to motherboards based on the Z370 Express chipset, which does support overclocking. The mainstream H370, as well as the value-oriented H310 chipset-based motherboards, are expected to become available later this year. For the enthusiast segment, Intel is rumored to debut the Z390 chipset in the second half of 2018. All of the new chipsets use the LGA 1151v2 socket, making them compatible with the Coffee Lake processors. A few upcoming motherboards based on the Z370 chipset have started leaking online already, so we can expect these new boards to be made official alongside the desktop Coffee Lake processors early next month.

How to Protect Your Laptop when Traveling

One of the benefits to using a laptop computer is its portability. Professionals who travel for business rely on being able to bring their laptops. Even people traveling for pleasure may elect to take a laptop with them in order to check emails and stay connected to friends and family back home. It is important to keep laptops safe while traveling by taking protective measures. Protect your laptop when traveling by storing it properly and paying attention to basic software security measures.

  1. Why are you bringing your laptop, are there other alternatives? Could you do your work in an internet cafe and save your work on a USB or hard drive?
  2. Use a reliable and padded case to transport your laptop. Regardless of your method of travel, you will need something to protect the laptop from movement and harm during transport. Use a case that can be carried as you would carry a briefcase, or a shoulder bag that is made well and provides padding and cushion.
  3. Keep your laptop with you while traveling. Do not leave your computer unattended in airports, train stations, or bus terminals. If you are traveling by car, be sure to keep it out of sight when you get out of the car for gas, food, and bathroom breaks. Take it into hotels with you overnight. If you are in a crowd keep you bag on your front. If you want to travel light it is best that you leave less valuable bulky luggage in storage.
  4. Humidity and heat. In hot countries heat and humidity can cause problems for your laptop.
  5. Voltage stabilizer. In some countries like India it is important you have a voltage stabilizer.
  6. Place your laptop on the security belt at the airport right before you walk through the metal detector. You will want to be able to pick it up off the conveyor belt immediately after it goes through the x-ray.
  7. Check your laptop before you leave to make sure all of your security software is up to date. Be sure your firewall is in place, and ensure you have anti-virus and anti-spyware applications running.
  8. Limit the amount of personal information you transmit on unfamiliar networks. When you travel, try not to transmit credit card information, or personal identification such as social security numbers or birth dates.
  9. Use passwords on your system and all of your files to protect your data if your laptop is stolen or compromised. Choose passwords that you can easily remember, but are not obvious.
  10. Purchase insurance for your laptop. Retailers such as Dell, Staples and Office Depot offer coverage for laptops. Most policies cover accidental damage, and some policies also cover loss and theft. Beware insurance for your laptop does not cover leaving your laptop unattended and is limited to 90 days and travel insurance although it covers more than 90 days usually has an item limit of around £300.
  11. There are ways you can keep your laptop safer when travelling, you could get a laptop lock(Kensington) and alarm such as alert both of these are more aimed at being deterrents than keeping your laptop totally safe, so it is best to keep it with you at all times.

Tips

  • When you are shopping for a laptop, take your travel plans into consideration. If you travel a lot, you may want to look for laptops that are lightweight and durable. Purchase something on the smaller side that is easy to pack.
  • If you are traveling by plane, do not check your laptop with other luggage. Carry it onto the plane with you. This will help prevent damage and loss.
  • Make sure to put your laptop at hotels inside safe box when you leave your room.
  • Remember to bring all necessary cords, batteries and adapters. You will likely need to charge your laptop when you travel, and an extra battery will provide additional back-up. If you are traveling internationally, you may need an adapter to access electricity in the foreign country.
  • Protect your bubble offers good insurance policies but beware it only lasts for 90 days abroad.
  • Laptop storage at an airport or expensive hotel is both expensive and often limited, so it is really not worth the hassle.The easiest and cheapest way is to keep it with you and take security measures such as keeping it close at all times and at night locked.

  • Voltage stabilizer. In countries such as India you ‘must’ use a voltage stabilizer if you don’t want to wreck your laptop. The best option is to buy one when you are out there.
  • Be careful about using your laptop in public places, especially if you are in an area you are not familiar with. Keep your laptop in the place you are staying, and use it privately to avoid attracting the attention of potential thieves.

Dell has launched what it claims is the world’s first All-in-One VR-ready workstation, the Precision 5720. As you would expect, the powerful All-in-One doesn’t come cheap. Prices start at Rs.1,09,000 for the base configuration.

How to Keep Your Laptop and Screen in a Good Shape

It is important to take a good care of your laptop. The prevention of problems are easier and better than fixing them after they happen. You may safeguard your notebook and its screen by using with care.

Steps

  1. Keep your notebook in an open area that has a good air circulation during the power on. Store it in a well circulated area too.
  2. Keep drinks and any liquids away from your notebook because short circuits by liquid destroy notebooks often. Also keep any food away from your notebook. Do not eat over because the crumbs go in the keyboard that cause the keys fail eventually. Wash your hands before using your notebook. Avoid leaving dirt and stains on the touchpad and keys.

Hold and lift your notebook by its base, not by its LCD screen. Avoid scratching and putting pressure on the LCD screen.   4. When bringing your notebook from colder place to warmer, do not turn it on immediately. Let it warm a few hours first. Do not leave your notebook unattended in a car.
  5. Do not disconnect the plug from the power socket by pulling on the power cord. Plug in external connectors and devices into their proper slots. Insert drives into their slots carefully, in right position, and at the correct angle. Try to keep the cord and all wires away from the floor and your legs.
  6. Use a special case when you carry the notebook. Do not drop the notebook. Its internal parts are very fragile.
  7. Clean your notebook regularly. Shut it down before cleaning. You may use an old toothbrush to rid of the dust in the area around the fan.

Gyroscope and Accelerometers Used in Smartphones

New generations of smartphones include intuitive features that may require the use of a built-in gyroscope or an accelerometer. A gyroscope allows you to change the orientation of the device by rotating its display. An accelerometer, on the other hand, tracks acceleration or senses device vibration. An on-board gyroscope and accelerometer work in combination with a smartphone’s operating system or specific software applications to perform these and other functions.

Gyroscope

A gyroscope allows a smartphone to measure and maintain orientation. Gyroscopic sensors can monitor and control device positions, orientation, direction, angular motion and rotation. When applied to a smartphone, a gyroscopic sensor commonly performs gesture recognition functions. Additionally, gyroscopes in smartphones help to determine the position and orientation of the phone.

Accelerometer

An accelerometer is a sensing element that measures acceleration as well as tilt, tilt angle, incline, rotation, vibration and collision. To offer functionality with a smartphone, the accelerometer software must translate the sensor output. Smartphones use several types of accelerometers, the sensing element and software representing the primary differences between the accelerometers. When applied to a smartphone, an accelerometer can automatically change the device’s screen orientation vertically or horizontally.

Microelectromechanical Systems

Microelectromechanical systems provide the technology that makes many of a smartphone’s features possible. This technology applies mechanical functions to small structures using dimensions in the micrometer scale. The gyroscopes and accelerometers inside of a smartphone use MEMS technology. The application of MEMS technology on smartphones also enables access for individuals with disabilities.

Security Threat

Introduction of new smartphone technologies can increase the risk of security threats. For example, researchers at Georgia Tech University uncovered a method by which smartphones users accessed information entered on a computer through the smartphone’s accelerometer and gyroscope by recording and deciphering keystrokes made on the computer.

The Apple Watch will be throttled to 3G data speeds on T-Mobile’s network

T-Mobile will limit data speeds on the Apple Watch Series 3 to a maximum of 512kbps despite the smartwatch’s support for LTE connectivity, a spokesperson has confirmed to The Verge. As MacRumors noticed earlier today, the throttled speeds are mentioned on the carrier’s website. Apple isn’t yet advising customers of T-Mobile’s capped data performance. The 512kbps limit is also applied to smartwatches from other companies such as Samsung.

“Customers can do everything they want to do with the watch at 512kbps,” a T-Mobile spokesperson said by email. “If customers feel they need high-speed data, they can choose high-speed data with paired DIGITS for $20 with auto-pay.” If auto-pay is not enabled for your plan, the cost is $25.

The standard fee that US carriers are charging to add the Apple Watch to your existing plan — so it can share your iPhone’s phone number — is $10 per month. Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and Sprint have not given any indication that they will limit the smartwatch’s download speeds. T-Mobile, on the other hand, is saying you’ll have to spend at least double the usual rate to unlock the Apple Watch Series 3’s full data speed capabilities.

It’s unclear why T-Mobile sees fit to slow down Apple’s smartwatch, which is unlikely to be much of a burden on the company’s network. At launch, Apple Watch Series 3 will support calls and texting over cellular connections, and third-party apps can also access data. Next month, Apple plans to release an update that will add support for streaming Apple Music directly from the Apple Watch. 512kbps should be enough to allow music streaming (Apple Music’s top bitrate is 256kbps), but it’s still very bizarre to me that T-Mobile — the company that constantly says its network is “built for unlimited” — has decided to put a ceiling in place at all.

Microsoft Surface Book successor will reportedly debut next month

According to a new report, Microsoft is going to hold its annual Future Decoded event in London from October 31st to November 1st this year. At the event, Surface chief Panos Panay is expected to deliver the keynote speech. Sources close to Microsoft suggest the company is likely to announce at least one new Surface device at the event. It is being speculated that the device in question could be the successor to the Surface Book, announced back in October 2015.

Along with the Surface Book successor, it is possible Microsoft might also debut an LTE variant of the Surface Pro as well as a new Surface Hub. As confirmed earlier this year, Microsoft is working with a number of PC makers to come up with new ARM-powered laptops running on Windows. While Microsoft hasn’t revealed any plans of building a Surface powered by an ARM processor yet, there is a small possibility of it happening. And if indeed Microsoft has been working on an ARM-powered Surface, we should find out more about it during the Future Decoded event next month.

As for the Surface Book 2, no concrete leaks have surfaced online yet, so there isn’t much that we know about it. According to speculations, the new model could feature an updated hinge design that will hopefully please all those users who weren’t too happy with the wide gap of the hinge on the original Surface book. Another rumored difference is a slightly different form-factor. While the Surface Book was detachable, its successor is more likely to feature a 2-in-1 form-factor with a reversible display. In terms of hardware, we expect the Surface Book 2 to run on the latest 8th Generation Core processors. You can also expect to see a few upgrades in other areas such as memory, storage, as well as the display resolution.

Lenovo launches four new Android tablets

Lenovo has launched four new Android tablets (yes, they still exist) under its Tab 4 line. First spotted by PhoneRadar, the Tab 4 8, Tab 4 8 Plus, Tab 4 10, and Tab 4 10 Plus are the latest additions to the company’s tablet offerings. They all run Android Nougat. Let’s break them down:

LENOVO TAB 4 10 PLUS

  • 1-inch Full HD display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor
  • Up to 64GB of storage
  • Up to 4GB of RAM
  • 8MP rear, 5MP front-facing camera

The Tab 4 10 Plus is the most powerful tablet Lenovo announced. It comes with an Adreno 506 GPU, dual front-facing speakers with Dolby Atmos support, a 7,000 mAh battery, a USB-C port, and a $279 starting price.

LENOVO TAB 4 10

  • 1-inch 1280 x 800 display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor
  • 16GB storage
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 8MP rear, 5MP front-facing camera

Essentially a budget version of the Plus, the Tab 4 10 is bigger and slower, with a worse display and doesn’t come with a fingerprint sensor like it’s big brother does. And Lenovo hasn’t released pricing for it yet.

LENOVO TAB 4 8 PLUS

  • 8-inch Full HD display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor
  • Up to 64GB of storage
  • Up to 4GB of RAM
  • 8MP rear, 5MP front-facing camera

The Tab 4 8 Plus is essentially a smaller version of the Tab 4 10 Plus with identical specs. The fingerprint sensor is integrated with the power button, it comes with a 4,850 mAh battery, and it’s available in slate black or polar white.

  • 8-inch 1280 x 800 display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor
  • 16GB storage
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 5MP rear, 2MP front-facing camera

This is the slowest tablet of the bunch, and probably the one you should avoid. These specs would be great in 2011, but not today.

US users are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to these tablets, as the international versions are far more powerful. US configurations max out at 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage for all of these tablets. But if you live elsewhere, these may be a good deal if you need a cheap Android tablet.

Rumor: NVIDIA is working on a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti

A new rumor out of China claims NVIDIA is currently working on a new GeForce GTX 1070 Ti graphics card. Just like the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, the GTX 1070 Ti will offer higher performance when compared to the standard GTX 1070. However, this would mean the GTX 1070 Ti will be more or less similar to the GTX 1080 in terms of performance, which makes it seem a bit illogical. The card will be based on NVIDIA’s GP104 Pascal silicon, just like the regular GeForce GTX 1070 and the GTX 1080.

According to the rumor, the GTX 1070 Ti will include 2304 CUDA cores and include 8GB of GDDR5 memory on a 256-bit bus interface. For reference, the GTX 1070 features 1920 CUDA cores while the GTX 1080 includes 2560 CUDA cores. In the US, the gap between the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 cards isn’t very wide. Currently, the GTX 1080 costs about $150 more than the GTX 1070. If the GTX 1070 Ti is indeed real, NVIDIA will no doubt have a tough time figuring out the pricing. Pricing it closer to the GTX 1070 could potentially be a bad idea as it would hurt the sales of the GTX 1070. On the other hand, pricing it closer to the GTX 1080 could make it seem overpriced.

In India too, the situation is more or less similar. What does make sense, is for NVIDIA to announce a price cut for the GTX 1070, which would allow it to further widen the gap between the GTX 1070 and the GTX 1080. If it can do that, the GTX 1070 Ti has the potential to hurt the sales of the AMD Radeon RX Vega 56, which outperforms the regular GTX 1070 and isn’t a whole lot more expensive. In India, the Radeon RX Vega 56 is priced slightly on the higher side, dangerously close to some of the cheaper GTX 1080 cards. If the GTX 1070 Ti does indeed exist, we should see it go official in the coming weeks.

One of the biggest changes in Apple’s new iPhones is the long-awaited addition of wireless charging. Wireless charging has been around for years at this point, which has left time for a large ecosystem of accessories to build up.

So, if you’re an iPhone user, you’ll probably want some kind of wireless charger to use with your new phone. Fortunately, Apple is using a wireless charging standard, called Qi, that nearly every other company in the industry has adopted (instead of making its own weird proprietary format), so getting a wireless charger for your iPhone 8 or iPhone X is actually pretty easy and pretty cheap.

Apple will be eventually releasing its own wireless charger, called AirPower, but it’s not set to release until sometime next year. If you want to be able to charge an iPhone 8 or iPhone X sooner, you’ll need a third party alternative.

There are tons of wireless charging options out there in the world, and finding one that’s actually good for your new iPhone can be confusing. So to help you get ready, we’ve put together a guide of what to look for in a wireless charger for your next iPhone.

  1. Qi charging: This may seem obvious, but there are a couple other wireless charging standards out there, so make sure whatever you pick up supports the Qi standard.
  2. 5W of power: The iPhone X and iPhone 8 are designed to charge at a maximum speed of 7.5W. So while chargers that output less than that will probably charge your phone, you’ll get the best performance from something rated for the full 7.5W.
  3. Standard connector: Most wireless charging pads plug in to an adapter of some kind to actually connect to a wall outlet. Some companies use weird proprietary jacks to plug in the pads, and others use standard ones like MicroUSB or USB-C. If you can, it’s probably better to go with a standard connector, just in case you damage or lose the cable. And while there aren’t any yet, it might be worth holding out for someone to make a Lighting-compatible charging pad so that you’ll be able to directly charge your phone with one cable, should you need to.
  4. Wall adapter: By the same vein, check to see if your charging pad actually comes with a wall adapter. If you’re expected to provide your own, make sure that it can provide enough wattage to charge at full speed — a 7.5W pad with a 5W wall jack will only charge at 5W.
  5. Brand: A wireless charging pad is still a charger, and when it comes to anything that passes electrical current through your $699–$999 smartphone, you’ll want to be extra sure that nothing is going to get accidentally fried. When in doubt, stick to brands with a good reputation for charging gear, like Anker, RavPower, Mophie, Belkin, or Samsung, to name a few.
  6. Size and aesthetics: There are a bunch of styles of wireless chargers, some big, some small, some flat, and some that charge your phone at an angle. Consider what you’d want on your desk or bedside table before buying.
  7. Future proofing: The iPhone 8 and iPhone X only support up to 7.5W for fast charging, but the latest Qi 1.2 standard actually offers up to 15W for compatible devices (like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8). So if you’re investing in wireless chargers, it might be worth looking out for a more powerful charger that will support future devices, should you change phones. As a note, getting a more powerful charger won’t hurt your lower rated devices — it’s similar to using an iPad charger to charge an old phone, where if the device can take advantage of the faster speeds, it will.
  8. AirPower: Lastly, you might just want to wait a bit. Apple showed off a new wireless charger, called AirPower, that’s set to launch sometime next year, which is expected to be able to charge an iPhone, Apple Watch Series 3, and AirPods simultaneously — typically, chargers can only power one device at a time. It’ll also use a Lightning cable for connectivity, which as mentioned before is useful for iPhone users. Plus, Apple is working with Qi to integrate AirPower features into the Qi standard, so it’s possible we’ll see new third-party chargers with similar functionality not too farther down the road.
